One of the seven "Great Houses of Scotland". Thirlestane Castle is the ancient seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale. It is still the Maitland family home.

Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott, the 19th century novelist and poet author of Waverley, Ivanhoe, Lady of the Lake etc. Scott purchased Cartleyhole Farmhouse and Steading on the banks of the River Tweed near Melrose.

Probably the most famous ruin in Scotland because of the elegant and elaborate stonework which remains.

This hill walk makes a circuit of Ladhope Moor, passing en route the large pile of stones marking Dobie's grave. Hillslap Tower can also be seen to the right of the track, dating from 1585.
